Firstly, many people confuse bran with the husk of the oat, which is wrong.  The husk of the oat is removed during the cleaning process, leaving what’s called the groat and it is the outer layer of the groat where the bran resides.  This outer layer of the groat is separated to produce the Oat Bran.

Wheat Bran actually provides more fibre than Oat Bran and contains fewer calories.  However, the type of fibre in Wheat Bran and Oat Bran differ and work in different ways.  Wheat Bran contains around 90% of insoluble which adds bulk without absorbing water.  Whereas, Oat Bran contains around 50-60% insoluble fibre with the rest being soluble fibre which absorbs water and forms a soft mass in the digestive tract.

Both Wheat Bran and Oat Bran contain high amounts of essential minerals and some vitamins.  Wheat Bran contains slightly more Niacin, vitamin B6 and Riboflavin, while Oat Bran contains slightly more Folate, Thiamine and Pantothenic Acid.

Wheat Bran, with its insoluble fibre, is considered to be helpful with digestive issues such as constipation.

Oat Bran, with its soluble fibre, is considered to be helpful with lowering cholesterol.  It is also helpful with limiting the amount of fats and sugars the body absorbs from foods, thus helping to control blood sugar levels.

When comparing Oat Bran and Wheat Bran, it's worth bearing in mind that some people are allergic to wheat.
