Top Tips for Winter Skin Care

It’s important to take care of your skin throughout the whole year.  Most people remember to take care of their skin through the summer months to moisturize and prevent sunburn, but many people don’t realise that it can be just as important through the winter months to take care of your skin and to protect your skin from the harsh cold weather outside and the heating systems indoors which can dry out and dehydrate your skin, leaving it dry, sore, flaking and cracking.

Here are my Top Tips for taking care of your skin and how you can keep your skin looking and feeling great through the winter:

KEEP HYDRATED BY DRINKING PLENTY OF FLUIDS TO HELP TAKE CARE OF YOUR SKIN DURING THE WINTER MONTHS

The cold weather outside and the heating systems indoors, all contribute to drying out our skin.  It’s important to remember to keep drinking plenty of fluids to keep your body and skin hydrated to help prevent dry and cracked skin.

KEEP MOISTURIZING TO HELP WITH YOUR WINTER SKIN CARE ROUTINE

There are some great moisturizing creams which will help keep your skin soft and supple through the winter months.  You can still be affected by UV rays even in the winter, so a moisturizer that contains SPF is ideal to help with your winter skin care.

Oil-based moisturizers will help protect your skin more than water-based ones.  Oil-based moisturizers help to create a protective layer on your skin than retains more moisture.  Look for non-clogging oils that won’t clog up your pores.  Oils like primrose oil or avocado oil are ideal.
Try to avoid alcohol-based toners or astringents as these can strip oil from your skin.  Try a more gentle cleansing milk instead.
Moisturizers that contain humectants such as glycerine or sorbitol will also help to attract moisture to your skin.
If you find that your normal cosmetics are not as easy to apply during the winter because your skin is dry, try using cosmetics with in-built moisturizers.  For example, you may find that liquid-based foundations are easier to apply and give you added moisturizing benefits over powder-based foundations.  Or why not try a tinted moisturizer to add a glow to your skin?

REMEMBER TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR LIPS DURING THE WINTER

The cold weather in winter results in chapped and sore dry lips for many people.  Remember to use a moisturizing lip balm to help protect your delicate lips to keep them looking in tip top condition.  It can be hard even to apply lipstick if your lips are left chapped and sore from the cold weather outside and the drying central heating indoors.  So keep your lips moisturized!

REMEMBER TO PROTECT YOUR HANDS DURING THE WINTER

Wear gloves outdoors to help protect your hands from becoming dry and scaly from the cold winter weather.  Bear in mind that woollen gloves can cause irritation in some people.   Moisturizing your hands with a quality hand cream will also help to protect from the drying effects of indoor central heating.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR FEET DURING THE WINTER

Wear warm socks/shoes/boots outside during the winter and try to avoid getting your socks wet in rainy/snowy weather, as this can cause the skin on your feet to become itchy, inflamed, cracked and sore.
