How to Calculate your BMI and What it Means

BMI stands for Body Mass Index and is used as a good indicator as to the amount of body fat a person has.  BMI applies to adult men and women and works by looking at an average person's weight and height to determine whether a person has a normal body weight or whether a person is over or under weight.  Basically, BMI is measuring whether a person is an average weight for their height or not.

BMI is worked out using the following equation (using pounds and inches): your weight (in pounds) divided by the square of your height (in inches), multiplied by 703.

Use the simple BMI calculator below to calculate your personal BMI (for adult men or women):

BMI measurements indications:

  • Underweight  =  less than 18.5
  • Normal weight  =  between 18.5 and 24.9
  • Overweight  =  between 25 and 29.9
  • Obesity  =  30 or over

Bear in mind that being classed as overweight through the BMI may not necessarily mean having extra body fat, but could also mean you have extra body weight from muscle and/or bone.

With BMI, obesity is generally classed as having too much extra body fat.

The Importance of Maintaining a Healthy Weight

Maintaining a healthy weight can help to prevent and control a range of health conditions and diseases, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and even some cancers.  If you are at your ideal weight, not only will you feel healthier but you will also feel more energetic.

Try to eat a balanced healthy diet and try to be more physically active. Gentle exercises, like walking, will help to get you more active if you are not used to physical exercise.  If the weather's miserable outside, consider getting a treadmill and start off at a slow walking pace before gradually building yourself up to a faster pace/jogging.  Treadmills are a great way of exercising in the comfort of your own home, without worrying about the weather outside!  Exercise bikes are another way of getting fit and are a low-impact form of exercising meaning they are more gentle on the joints than some other exercise machines.
