Lose Weight Without Counting Calories with the Dukan Diet

It’s great to know that there are diets out there that help you to lose weight without the tediousness of having to count calories.  The Dukan Diet is effectively one of those diets where you don’t have to worry about counting calories.  Pierre Dukan, a French doctor, came up with the idea behind the Dukan Diet many years ago whilst treating patients for obesity.  He designed a diet that would help patients not just to lose weight in the first place, but one that would help prevent the patients from regaining the weight that they did lose.

The Dukan Diet is effectively a protein-rich low-fat diet, based on a list of over 100 allowed foods, and spread out over 4 specific phases.  None of the phases involve calorie counting!  The 4 phases are as follows:

  • Attack
  • Cruise
  • Consolidation
  • Stabilization

The Dukan Diet Attack Phase

The Attack Phase is designed to help dieters kick-start their metabolism and quickly lose weight of between 4 and 6 pounds (2-3 kg) in the first 2-7 days.

In this phase, you are allowed to eat any amount from a range of 72 different protein-rich foods.  Proteins pass slowly through the digestive system, and will help to make you feel full.

Eating 1.5 tablespoons of oat bran a day is recommended during this phase.

You are also advised to drink 1.5 litres of water a day, and take a 20 minute walk.

The Dukan Diet Cruise Phase

The Cruise Phase is designed to help dieters gradually lose the amount of weight they are aiming for.

In this phase, you are allowed to eat protein-rich foods, plus a selection of 28 different named vegetables.  Pure protein days are alternated with protein and vegetable days.

Eating 2 tablespoons of oat bran a day is recommended during this phase.

The length of the Cruise Phase will vary from person to person, depending on how much weight a dieter wishes to lose. The Cruise Phase will take you to your desired goal.

You are advised to take a 30 minute walk a day during this phase.

Dieters are expected to lose an average of around 2 pounds (1kg) in weight per week.

The Dukan Diet Consolidation Phase

The Consolidation Phase, as the name suggests, helps dieters to prevent the weight gain that is normally occurs after any weight loss.

In this phase, dieters will gradually introduce fruit, cheese, bread and other carbohydrates back into the diet.  2 celebratory meals per week are also allowed, where you can eat what you like.  1 day per week must still be only pure proteins.

Eating 2 tablespoons of oat bran a day is recommended during this phase.

You are advised to take a 25 minute walk during this phase.

Dieters are expected to lose an average of 1 pound in weight per 5 days.

The Dukan Diet Stabilization Phase

The Stabilization Phase allows dieters to eat whatever they want, with just 3 simple rules that must be followed:

  • One day a week, eat only protein.
  • Eat oat bran every day (3 tablespoons is recommended).
  • Commit to everyday activities like climbing the stairs instead of taking the lift.

The Stabilization Phase is a commitment for the rest of your life and if you follow it, you should be able to avoid ever gaining weight again.
