The Concept of Alternative Therapies Explained

Alternative therapies are also known as Complementary Therapies, as they all complement each other as well as complementing conventional and modern medicine.  Many practices considered “alternative” are in fact age-old therapies based on traditional folk medicine that have existed in different cultures and countries for generations.

Alternative therapies are based on an holistic approach which treats the well-being of the whole person, not just their physical symptoms, but also their mental, emotional, energetic and spiritual levels too, with the object of inducing a state of complete balance and harmony.  It is a much more gentle approach, without the side-effects that some modern medicines can bring.
A practitioner in alternative therapies is not considered to be curing a patient, but rather helping to stimulate and balance out the patient’s own healing energies, thus enabling an individual to take responsibility for their own well-being.  Emphasis is therefore placed on a patient taking responsibility for their own state of health and a positive attitude is always encouraged as this goes a long way toward attaining and sustaining a healthy body and mind.

It is also important to remember that most conditions have taken time to manifest and will therefore take to time to heal.

Both modern and alternative medicines have their place in the world and the ideal would be for them both to work in conjunction with each other for the benefit of achieving the optimum improvement in the health care of an individual.   Bearing this in mind, alternative health care practitioners seek to work in conjunction with the medical profession.  Besides a thorough knowledge of their chosen subject, a practitioner’s qualities include having a caring and compassionate outlook, together with a genuine desire to help others.

There are numerous therapies now widely available, giving people a much greater choice in their own health care. It is useful to have a knowledge of different therapies, as different people, and different conditions, may well respond better to one therapy than another.
