What is Oat Bran and its Health Benefits

If you’ve ever looked at the Dukan Diet, you will know that Oat Bran comes highly recommended, but you may be wondering what exactly is Oat Bran and how does it benefit your health.

Oat Bran and its health benefits, helps to lower cholesterol and slows down absorption of sugars and fats
What Oat Bran Is
Firstly, many people confuse bran with the husk of the oat, which is wrong.  The husk of the oat is removed during the cleaning process, leaving what’s called the groat and it is the outer layer of the groat where the bran resides.  This outer layer of the groat is separated to produce the Oat Bran.

The Health Benefits of Oat Bran

Helps to Lower Cholesterol and Slows Down Absorption of Sugars and Fats

Oat Bran helps to lower cholesterol because it contains soluble fibre which helps to reduce the absorption of cholesterol (LDL) into the bloodstream.  The way the body processes Oat Bran once ingested, helps to reduce the absorption of sugars and fats and is therefore a useful aid in dieting.

Helps to Create a Satisfied Full-Up Feel

The soluble fibre of Oat Bran, once ingested, absorbs water (around 25 x its volume) to form a soft round mass that helps to create a feeling of fullness.  This helps with dieting as the dieter will feel less hungry and be less likely to want to snack.  Oat Bran has a finer texture to it than Oatmeal and therefore has a creamier consistency which also helps to satisfy hunger.

Differences Between Oat Bran and Wheat Bran

Differences between oat bran and wheat bran, different types of fibre
Wheat Bran actually provides more fibre than Oat Bran and contains fewer calories.  However, the type of fibre in Wheat Bran and Oat Bran differ and work in different ways.  Wheat Bran contains around 90% of insoluble which adds bulk without absorbing water.  Whereas, Oat Bran contains around 50-60% insoluble fibre with the rest being soluble fibre which absorbs water and forms a soft mass in the digestive tract.

Both Wheat Bran and Oat Bran contain high amounts of essential minerals and some vitamins.  Wheat Bran contains slightly more Niacin, vitamin B6 and Riboflavin, while Oat Bran contains slightly more Folate, Thiamine and Pantothenic Acid.

Wheat Bran, with its insoluble fibre, is considered to be helpful with digestive issues such as constipation.

Oat Bran, with its soluble fibre, is considered to be helpful with lowering cholesterol.  It is also helpful with limiting the amount of fats and sugars the body absorbs from foods, thus helping to control blood sugar levels.

When comparing Oat Bran and Wheat Bran, it's worth bearing in mind that some people are allergic to wheat.
