Part 2 - Functions & Benefits of the 7 Main Minerals Required by the Body in Moderate Amounts for Good Health

Functions and Benefits of the 7 Main Minerals Required by the Body in Moderate Amounts for Good Health continued.

Functions:  Phosphorus combines with calcium in the bones and teeth.  It aids in growth and repair of the body.  It’s also important for heart regularity and for normal kidney functioning.  Phosphorus plays a role in energy metabolism of the cells, affecting carbohydrates, lipids and proteins.  It’s also important for muscle and nerve activity.

Natural sources of phosphorus include: fish, poultry, meat, whole grains, milk, eggs, nuts and seeds.

Excesses of phosphorus could result in:  no known toxicity.  However, it is thought that excess may result in depressed absorption of iron and manganese.

Deficiencies of phosphorus could result in:  inflammation of the gums; poor growth; rickets in children (softening and deformity of the bones).

Functions:  Potassium combined with sodium regulates the body’s water balance and normalises heart rhythms. It also contributes to nerve impulse conduction & muscle contraction.

Natural sources of potassium include: citrus fruits, green leafy vegetables, bananas, potatoes, sunflower seeds and meats.

Excesses of potassium could result in:  muscle weakness; cardiac abnormalities

Deficiencies of potassium could result in:  oedema; cardiac problems; muscle weakness; paralysis.

Functions:  Sodium is needed for normal growth.  It aids in proper functioning of nerves and muscles as well as the transportation of glucose and other nutrients.  Sodium helps keep calcium and other minerals in the blood soluble.  It also helps prevent heat / sunstroke and helps to regulate the body’s water balance.

Natural sources of sodium include:  salt; cured meats (e.g. ham); frankfurters; shellfish.  Many pre-packaged foods have added salt.

Excesses of sodium could result in:  oedema; high blood pressure.

Deficiencies of sodium could result in:  impaired digestion; abdominal / muscle cramping.

Functions:  Sulphur is part of tissue-building amino acids.  It’s a component of connective tissue in cartilage, tendons, and bones.  Sulphur is abundant in hair, skin and nails, playing a role in their health.

Natural sources of sulphur include:  meat, fish, milk, eggs, legumes, and cabbage.

Excesses of sulphur could result in:  no known toxicity.

Deficiencies of sulphur could result in:  none known.
