What are Minerals and How do they Help with the Body's Health, Explained

Minerals are inorganic nutrients required in the structural composition of hard and soft body tissues and also play a part in processes such as the action of enzyme systems, the contraction of muscles, nerve reactions and the clotting of blood.

Similar to the function of vitamins, minerals work together with other nutrients to ensure the efficient functioning of the body, so it’s important to ensure an all-round balanced diet.

Some minerals are incorporated into the body’s structure to give added strength, e.g. calcium helps to strengthen the teeth and bones.  Other minerals are ionised in body fluids or are bound to organic compounds to form molecules, such as hormones, enzymes etc.

Altogether, minerals make up about 4% of a person’s total body weight, with calcium and phosphorus accounting for around 3% (as bone salts), while the rest of the minerals account for around 1%).

The minerals required by the body can be split into two groups, with 7 main minerals required in moderate amounts, while the rest are known as trace minerals which are required in smaller amounts by the body, as follows:


7 Main Minerals

Out of all the minerals, 7 are required by the body in moderate amounts to help maintain good health and correct bodily functions.  These main minerals are:

·         Postassium
·         Sulphur
·         Sodium
·         Chlorine
·         Magnesium

Trace Minerals

Trace amounts of several others minerals are also needed by the body to help maintain good health and correct bodily functions.  These trace minerals include:

·         Chromium
·         Cobalt
·         Copper
·         Fluorine
·         Iodine
·         Iron
·         Manganese
·         Selenium
·         Zinc
